NEW LONDON—Narconon, a drug rehabilitation program here, has begun a campaign to increase public awareness of drug and alcohol misuse.

Mayor Carl Stoner weill proclaim May 15 through June 30 Alcohol and Drug Awareness Month in the city at tonight’s City Council meeting.

Narconon will coordinate activities in the city relating to Alcohol and Drug Awareness Month.

This week, New London Police Department Youth Officer Odd Krogud will present a drug misuse prevention program to all city sixth-graders. The program includes the film “Born Hooked,” as well as discussion of the long-term effects of drug misuse by Narconon’s Patricia O’Neill with New London High School seniors.

There will also be public service announcements on WNLC from June 4 through 15.

O’Neill said the purpose of the program “is to get the citizens of New London to actively do something about drug abuse in our city.”

She added that agencies in the city are cooperating with Narconon, and pamphlets and films from the March of Dimes are also available.

An anti-drug coalition is being formed in southeast Connecticut during the month as well, she said.
